Running with the Herd

Every year as winter approaches, Icelandic farmers round up their horses, escorting them on the long passage from high summer pastures to safer winter fields. This tradition has endured for 1000 years, and the 4-day journey culminates with a gathering of locals who trade horses, liquor and tales from the road.

I was commissioned by Norwegian ‘N’ Magazine to follow the herd of Haukur Suska-Garðarsson, through moorland and across rivers, as cold winds began to arrive from the Arctic circle.
